Myocarditis – The Story Of A Strong Heart
Myocarditis is inflammation of the heart muscle (myocardium). The inflammation of the heart muscle causes degeneration or death of heart muscle cells. Myocarditis has many different causes and can result in a range of outcomes from mild (presenting briefly and resolving) to rapidly progressing fatal disease.
I remember coming across this video on Facebook sometime February this year.
When your child teeters between life and death, they are the doctors who stand and hold the gate. Meet the warriors who blend strength and compassion, at the children's intensive care unit of KK Women's and Children's Hospital. More on #InsideTheCICU: cna.asia/2ngGAta

This medical condition bears no personal meaning to me prior to 2016. But it was in 2016 where i did my first major claim for one of my customer. From then on, this medical condition was no longer just a definition that i can google online. It became a medical condition that was inscribed onto the medical records of a 10 year old girl. And this girl, her name is Alice*. Her mother, Mdm J, had previously purchased her family’s health insurances from a ex-colleague of mine. Yes, ex-colleague. We do have a relatively high turnover rate in my industry.
Mdm J’s family policies were assigned to me after she called in to the company to seek help for a hospitalization claim, and that was how I did my first ever claim for a customer, an experience that left a really deep impression on me.
I remember the first time i met Mdm J, we were waiting outside the surgery theater for Alice to complete her surgery. She was all tears and could not accept how such a condition could hit a girl who the previous day was a flower girl to her aunt’s wedding. The doctors were unable to give a conclusion on how this medical condition occurred and what are the underlying causes of the inflammation.
Alice, at 10 years old, had to undergo a major surgery and was admitted into Intensive Care Unit for more than a week.
Her post surgery recovery has not been the smoothest journey as well, given that there were certain complications which resulted in the weakening of her leg muscles. She had to be wheelchair-bound for a couple of months, go through intensive physiotherapy so that she could regain proper control over her limbs.
But the bigger concern that both Alice’s parents and I had, was her emotional well-being. She had to go for school and could not join in many of the activities with her friends. She had to be under the scrutiny of the other kids around her who could not understand or empathize with her situation. Yes, this happened too, sadly. It is not just the heart and body that needs to recover physically, but emotionally as well.
2 years had passed since Alice was diagnosed with this near fatal condition. We were very lucky that she had a strong heart *pun intended* that could withstand all these challenges that were thrown at her. She is now no longer wheelchair-bound, and she no longer has that gloomy look on her. It is really important that the family can be there to support her when she needs them.
I have a role to play too. My role in this story comes in the form of financial protection. We ensure that the huge bill that came after all these treatments were well taken care of, so that the family can focus on Alice’s recovery and not have finance become a burden to them.
We are not defeated by adversity but by the loss of the will to strive. However devastated you may feel, so long as you have the will to fight on, you can surely triumph. – Daisaku Ikeda
